Hymns have been an important part of worship for thousands of years. The book of Psalms in the Old Testament is actually a collection of the lyrics to hymns — the Psalms were meant to be sung. They are also beautiful prayers. Modern day hymns can be prayers too. If you do a Google search on “favorite hymns of all time,” you will see all sorts of opinions about the greatest, most popular and best loved hymns.

My favorite is “Precious Lord, Take my Hand” because it reminds me that the Lord is always with me.

“Precious Lord, take my hand, Lead me on, let me stand;
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn.
Through the storm, through the night, Lead me on to the Light,
Take my hand, precious Lord; lead me home.

“When my way grows drear, Precious Lord, linger near,
When my life is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call; Hold my hand lest I fall.
Take my hand, precious Lord; lead me home.

“When the darkness appears and the night draws near
And the day is almost gone,
At the river I stand; Guide my feet, hold my hand,
Take my hand, precious Lord; lead me home”.
(Thomas A Dorsey 1899-1993)
