Ascension Day is Today!

Every Sunday we confess that we believe in Jesus’ birth, death, resurrection and ascension.  Forty days after the first Easter, Jesus ascended bodily up from earth.  Here’s the account written by Luke in the Book of Acts:

“. . . while they (the Apostles) watched, Jesus was taken up and a cloud received Him out of their sight.  And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel who also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven?  This same Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.’ ”  Acts 1:9-11

Note that this miraculous event was witnessed by the 11 disciples now called Apostles.  Note the promise made by the angel: Jesus will return in the same manner. Note the promise for you and me in First Thessalonians 4:16b-17:  “And the dead in Christ will rise first.  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.  And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”

Today we celebrate The Ascension — a miracle of the past — a promise for the future!
